Abstract
Topic: Orthodontic transverse discrepancy and its effect on sagittal and vertical dimensions
The importance of diagnosis and corrections of transverse problems are increasingly recognized by orthodontic clinicians although it was easily ignored in traditional model and cephalometric analysis. Similar to other three-dimensional structures, the transverse jaw and teeth relationships would not only influence our bite in transverse dimension but would also significantly affect our sagittal and vertical jaw and teeth relationships. This lecture will firstly introduce current transverse orthodontic diagnosis especially under the background of new technology and updated literatures. Next it will discuss possible solutions following differential diagnosis in transverse dimension: dental arch expanison, rapid palatal expansion in adolescent, screws assisted palatal expansion in young adults.  Then it will demonstrate how transverse relationship fundamentally affects other two dimensions, i.e. sagittal and vertical dimensions. Finally, the effect of transverse solutions on dental and facial aesthetics, functions and long-term stabilities will be discussed.
